Mazda has released fuel economy figures for the all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata in the United States and there’s good news for those who hate frequent trips to the pump.
Since the car is up to 150 lbs (68 kg) lighter than its predecessor, it is not only quicker and more nimble, it is also 25 percent more economical. The 2016 Mazda MX-5 achieves an EPA-estimated 27 mpg (8.7 l/100 km) city/34 mpg (6.9 l/100 km) highway/30 mpg (7.8 l/100 km) combined when equipped with the standard Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual transmission.
This represents a 25-percent increase in fuel economy compared to the 2015 MX-5’s EPA-estimated fuel economy when paired with the outgoing model’s available six-speed manual transmission.
As for the version equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission, it is even more fuel-efficient than the manual model on the highway, returning an EPA-estimated 36 mpg (6.5 l/100 km). City and combined ratings are identical with the manual, at 27 mpg and 30 mpg, respectively.
“There has always been an MX-5 for all types of drivers, from weekend autocross and track-day enthusiasts to those who just want a stylish convertible sports car. With its improved fuel-efficiency, we believe that audience will grow even larger when it goes on sale this summer,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations.
