Here’s the first official sketch of Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming GLC Coupé, which will be unveiled in concept form at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month.

Based on the forthcoming Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV, which is the successor to the GLK, the GLC Coupé will be a rival for the BMW X4. The automaker says the concept is a “near-production-standard study” – as most concepts are nowadays.

Basically, the GLC Coupé will be a smaller GLE Coupé based on the new C-Class architecture. Mercedes-Benz also says the styling of the Concept GLE Coupé previews what future SUVs from Stuttgart will look like.

The design sketch shows Mercedes’ familiar design language, sporting the brand’s current design cues with a wide grille and an athletic stance. Since it will be based on the GLC SUV, the GLC Coupé will be offered with the same petrol and diesel engines, and possibly with a plug-in hybrid variant.

The production model is not expected to arrive before 2017.
