This new generation Polestar Performance Optimization is a new concept based on the idea that a vehicle’s drivetrain should be optimized together with the engine. Which is obvious, really.
The program is available for most Volvo models packing Drive-E engines, and it includes optimized engine performance, throttle response, gearshift speed & precision and off-throttle response. None of the changes will influence your emissions, fuel consumptions, service intervals and car warranty in any way.
Polestar Test Driver and Reigning STCC Champion Thed Bjork said that “We use the same philosophy when developing the optimizations as for our race cars. Drivability is everything in racing; it is about having power available when you need it and to be in control. It is exactly the same thing when driving a road car. The more exact response to driver input and predictability from the powertrain, the higher level of control for the driver.”
We’re with them all the way, since everyone who’s ever driven a Drive-E powered Volvo knows that the throttle response and gearshift speed weren’t exactly at the same level as what you got in an Audi/Merc/BMW.
The general focus for the optimizations has been mid-range performance – which should improve one’s driving experience over a broad range of scenarios.
Throttle response, engine performance and gearshift speed will help the driver during overtaking maneuvers or with general acceleration, while the off-throttle response and gearshift precision will keep the car balanced and make it more dynamic and responsive to drive.
The first optimization will be released in the last week of June 2015 and it will include the T6, T5, D5 and D4 engines, while in total, over 140 different variations of optimizations will be released over the coming months.
