Volkswagen opened the order books for the new, pumped-up versions of the Golf Estate, the R, GTD and Alltrack, ahead of first deliveries in August.
You can now order a Golf R or GTD in Estate form or -if you want an extra pinch of versatility- the 4-wheel drive Golf Alltrack. The first two offer the same powertrains with the hatchback versions but with a bigger boot as you would expect, increasing the 380lt luggage space to a massive 605lt with the rear seats in position and up to 1620lt with them folded.
The Golf R Estate is capable of a 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds with the top speed limited to 155mph as usual, thanks to the same turbocharged 300PS 2.0-litre engine we’ve met under the bonnet of the Golf R Hatchback. Sadly though there is no manual option for the R Estate, just the silly-fast six-speed DSG transmission.
If you want a manual and go fast at the same time with a Golf Estate, your only option is the GTD Estate which uses a very nice 184PS 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. It may not have the punch of the R, but it can still manage a 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds and still return 64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2 emissions. Top speed is 143mph.
Featuring a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system and a higher ground clearance by 20mm, the Golf Alltrack is for those who just don’t like SUVs but still want the versatility. With flared arches and side sills for better protection, the Golf Alltrack follows the same footsteps with the bigger Passat Alltrack. The engine range contains three diesel units for the UK market, a 1.6-litre TDI with 110PS, a 2.0-litre TDI with 150PS and the same 184PS 2.0-litre TDI engine the GTD uses mated to a DSG transmission exclusively.
The Golf R Estate is priced from £33,585 with the manual GTD Estate starting from £28,285 and the Alltrack 1.6 TDI from £26,790.
