So, the wait for GM’s hotly anticipated 6th-gen Camaro ended today with the official reveal of the car during a special event in its home town of Detroit.
You can read all the preliminary details in Zac’s post here, but the headline news include an evolution of the exterior design with some hints of the Corvette C6, broader use of lighter materials and a new Cadillac ATS-sourced platform, which along with the more compact dimensions, help shave around 200 pounds (91kg).
The interior is a clean sheet design with GM promising improved quality and materials, but it doesn’t avoid the excessive styling of its predecessor.
The big event under the hood is the introduction of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four with 275hp and 295 lb-ft that should return more than 30mpg highway while getting the Camaro up to 60mph (96km/h) in “well less than 6 seconds”. The other engine options for now are a redesigned 3.6-liter V6 rated for 335hp and GM’s new LT1 6.2-liter V8 pushing out 455hp. Replacements for the ZL1, Z/28 and SS 1LE together with the Convertible will follow later on.
Personally, I’m warming up to the exterior but not really feeling the interior that looks like it was made to impress owners of the Hyundai Tiburon (some of you may know it as the Coupe or Tuscani). The preliminary specs look good, but we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on one before we pass any judgments.
Now, it’s time for you to tell us what you think.
