Even though they’ve yet to score any points in 2015, McLaren is starting to see positive results within the team dynamics.
Racing director Eric Boullier told Autosport that “There’s been a huge change in overall culture and philosophy. At every level of the company, there is clear leadership. We agree the direction we want to pursue, and we bring people with us.”
What’s more impressive is the example Boullier gave to the press when discussing this issue. He said that “about 50 per cent of the upgrades we brought to the track last year didn’t completely work. This year, we’ve brought that down to about five or 10 per cent.”
Engineering director Matt Morris (joined from Sauber in 2013) backed that up by saying that “Before we restructured, some people felt they were just doing what they were told rather than being part of the process. Now, people feel more empowered: a piece of the car is theirs, and they take pride in that.”
We’re certain that in the course of the next few races, McLaren will finally score a couple of points. It may even be in Barcelona next weekend on May 10. If not, Monaco’s low speed corners might help them a lot with keeping up with the rest of the pack, since there’s nowhere to max the car out.
