This is not the first review that pits the BMW M235i (or 125i) against the very different but equally-German VW Golf GTI. It’s a kind of non-quantifiable national rivalry between two models that don’t cost the same, don’t look the same and don’t drive that way either.

Even so, journos always find there’s reason to compare the two, and we can kind of see what they’re on about. Both are from the same country, both are sporty versions of more mundane cars and both have a great image and high levels of quality inside.

What differentiates the two is obviously the price, the axle which transfers power to the road and the problem of practicality, where the cheaper, less sophisticated Golf nudges out.

It’s still a car that can carry your chest of drawers, and that hasn’t changed from the days of the Mark IV Golf.
