The all-new Opel Astra is no longer a mystery, thanks to an Italian website which has leaked the first official photos of the new compact car.
Based on GM’s new Delta platform, the fifth-generation Astra is more compact and about 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. While its design is new, it’s very easy to identify it as an Astra, thanks to the familiar shape of the bodywork and the light units.
The VW Golf rival sports a new grille with a chrome trim in the upper part, but the most interesting design element has to be the beautifully integrated “floating” C-pillar.
The optional IntelliLux LED Matrix headlights feature eight LED segments which automatically adjust the intensity and length of the beam, depending on the presence of incoming traffic.
Inside, the new Opel Astra features a completely redesigned dashboard. The center console gets a new touchscreen-based infotainment system compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as a new steering wheel.
As for engine options, the new Astra will be available with petrol engines including the base 115PS 1.0-liter 3-cylinder, the 140PS 1.4-liter turbo and a new 1.6-liter biturbo with 195PS. Diesel units include the 1.6-liter and a new 2.0-liter CDTI with 195PS. Expect more information and pictures in the coming days as Opel will no doubt react to this early leak. The Astra will officially debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
