According to Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne, the team will pose much more of a threat to Mercedes in time for the Italian Grand Prix.
You can add both Vettel & Raikkonen as well as the fans to the list of people surprised by how well Ferrari have handled themselves this season.
Last year they finished 4th in the Constructor Standings with 216 points, whereas in 2015 they already have 192 points, sitting pretty in 2nd place behind Mercedes.
“I think that you will see the car develop as we go through the season,” said Marchionne, before adding “I feel relatively comfortable that by the time we hit Monza we are going to be in a much stronger position than we have been in all season.”
What exactly a “much stronger position” could mean for Mercedes (and Williams for that matter) is unknown, but odds are they’re not going to start beating the reigning world champs all of a sudden and rally to take the Constructors Title.
Williams poses a huge threat to Ferrari as well since they’re currently pretty even as far as performance – with Ferrari having a very slight edge that can come and go depending on which track they’re racing on.
In fact, it’s probably a lot more likely that Williams closes the gap on Ferrari by the end of the year and challenges them for 2nd place, than Ferrari closing in on the Silver Arrows.
