Nissan is reportedly considering giving the current shape Nissan Leaf a battery pack with tech that will be featured on the next-gen model.
Apparently, the automaker “may be preparing” to use a 30 kWh battery pack that offers up to 105 – 110 claimed miles of autonomy – the 2016 Leaf is promised to deliver twice the current model’s range, so it clearly isn’t the exact pack which that car will use.
Compared to the pack currently used, it can store an extra 6 kWh, the source of the extra range. InsideEVs quotes information posted on the MyNissanLeaf forum about how the rumor came about, although it’s neither been confirmed nor denied by official sources.
The article goes on to talk about sales cannibalization; if people find out that the Leaf is getting a better battery pack before the model is phased out they may just wait for that one and not buying the current one. This is a real danger they say that’s only made even more evident by the extra range you’ll be able to get in the all-new Chevy Volt.
An all-new Nissan Leaf is due out next year, and it would make sense for Nissan to want to implement better battery tech if they already have it, but it could make some new Leafs very desirable (the ones with the bigger pack) while ones that don’t have it may start stacking up on dealer lots.
