The BYD e6 is the only production car equipped as standard with the capability to return power to the grid via the AC charging system, but I bet you already knew that.
Yes, the all-electric Chinese crossover has a V2G – Vehicle-to-grid – charging system which allows it to discharge its power into the framework.
But what’s the point to all this? Well, as BYD states, “e6 owners can charge their vehicle when the cost of electricity is lower – after a period of strong sunlight, for example – and using the special capabilities of the e6 then sell it back to the grid at periods of peak demand (or when the sun is not shining!).”
Still not impressed?
As BYD has a scheme that targets the public transit, selling e6s for taxi and private-hire uses in Europe and running a pilot program in the U.S. through Uber, it offers drivers the possibility to cut costs.
Of course, there will be many hogging up the charging station for a quick buck, but other than that, the idea genuinely helps taxi drivers, Uber drivers, or self-employed individuals.
The next generation e6 model promises a 400 Km range, which beyond the obvious range advantage will be able to store and then return excess energy back into the grid. Furthermore, the BYD e6 comes in four different power combination, including a 269 HP option – which sounds nice.
