Toyota reportedly registered the “S-FR” trademark, which means the time for speculations has arrived.
According to Supramkv forums, the application was filed on May 28, at the US Trademark and Patent office for “automobiles and structural parts thereof”
We can’t help but wonder, what do these three letter represent for Toyota? Is it the future Supra? Is it the collaboration between the Japanese car manufacturer and BMW? Is it a cheaper car than the Scion FR-S/Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ?
We know Toyota fans are waiting for the return of the Supra like it’s the next messiah, but there’s no point of getting their hopes up for just a registered suffix (like Toyota did with the FT-1 concept-car)
The name FR-S, carried by the American version of the GT86, is derived from the description of the platform on which the car is built on: Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport car. Taking that into account, could the new name mean Sport car, Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive? Probably not…
It could very well be the Supra Mark V, but it could be, just as well a way for Toyota to protect its FR-S model. By registering a similar name, other car manufacturers won’t try to create something remotely similar to the original FR-S.
Nonetheless, it could be everything, or it could be nothing. We just hope it’s the right thing.
One thing is for sure, “S-FR” is a dull name.
