The US will go green big time, or at least that’s what a research company called Navigant Research is estimating. They’re saying that between the US and Canada, some 1 million plug-ins per year will be sold in nine years’ time.
In 2014, the US recorded a plug-in sales figure of 133,000, of which just over half were fully-electric vehicles.
Navigant Research predicts that with a (compound annual) growth rate of between 16 and 20.9 percent, “the United States is expected to be the largest market throughout the forecast period, with PEV sales in 2024 exceeding 860,000 in the conservative scenario and 1.2 million in the aggressive.”
California will account for around a third of all sales, while states with laws similar to it (Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Vermont) making up another third.
Navigant Research also noted that out of the remaining states, the highest chance of quick and surprising growth comes from Hawaii, Washington and Georgia thanks to their large vehicle markets, good infrastructure and incentive programs.
