Reviving old-style graphics is a widely adopted current in the indie (or independent) gaming industry, and you occasionally come across titles like Drift Stage.
It is a 3D game, but its art style owes everything to the look of vintage racing titles from the early 1990s. The result, as is often the case with these small games, is striking and looks like its gameplay component might also be up to scratch.
The cars feel very arcade-y in the way they handle, but you initiate a drift by tapping the brakes – a real life technique that is satisfying to apply in-game as well. Currently, you don’t seem to gather points when drifting, but then again the game is still in early alpha stage and could change a lot before it’s done.
It is fun to play and pulling off huge drifts until the very end is deeply satisfying. The available free demo is very limited and only really allows you to drift one track with no opponents or scoring system.
Keep in mind this game is still in early alpha stage and may change a lot over the course of development. The finished game will have a career mode, possible team management mechanics and multiplayer implemented too; no word on a release date, but according to posts on the official forum, it’s rumored to be December 2015.
