It seems that Ford is working on the next big thing in styling.
The American car manufacturer filed some patent applications regarding luminescent panels and trims on future cars. In other words, Ford wants to illuminate its future vehicles, making them more visible at nighttime.
The application was registered on June 25, it was discovered by a Focus RS Club forum user and it features a Mustang as an example.
According to the filed patent: “The molding includes a cover panel portion mounted to a body panel of the vehicle. A carrier is disposed between the cover panel portion and the body panel, the carrier having an exposed portion configured to luminescence in response to light excitation. At least one light source is disposed inside the carrier and is configured to emit light for exciting the exposed portion.”
Basically, it will be something similar to the Mercedes ambient lightning, only it will be featured on the outside of the car.
Remember when neons where the ultimate trend back in the day, bringing various colors to the modding scene? Well, Ford seems eager to invent a new movement, with LED strips placed strategically on a car’s body in order to accentuate its design.
As Ford envisions the project, the addons will be used for decorative and functional purposes. Mind you these kind of visual enhancement are present in the Japanese modding car culture for quite some time now.
