GreenTeam Formula has created the fastest accelerating electric vehicle in the world, a feat pending confirmation by Guinness World Records.

The all-wheel drive vehicle was clocked from 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 1.779 seconds; the previous record stood at 1.785 seconds.

If you’re expecting the power figure needed to achieve this to be huge, you’d be way off the mark. It only had a 134 hp electric motor to do the job, drawing juice from a 6.62 kWh battery pack.

The ultra-low acceleration times are possible thanks to a combination of instant power and torque, plus the exceedingly low weight (just 160 kg or ~353 lbs) coupled to the massive grip provided by the slick, sticky tires.

On a different note, perhaps electric vehicle competitions shouldn’t have to be exactly like the ones we’re used to from the combustion engine era. Maybe they should participate in bespoke events specifically created to take full advantage of their peculiarities so as not to end up having to change cars mid-race – that’s a bit ridiculous if you ask me.

This looks like more fun even if it’s basically just drag racing with no opponent or sound. Scroll down for the video of the record breaking run!
