The Mercedes A45 AMG might have its days numbered as the maddest hyper hatchback, as it could be dethroned by a hybrid Peugeot…

The 308R-Hybrid was shown at the Shanghai auto show in April and nobody in their wildest dreams ever imagined it could become a production car now.

But apparently it is, and if you don’t believe us do check out Peugeot CEO Maxime Picat’s Twitter account where you’ll see him alongside what seems to be a part-camouflaged mule.

As a reminder, the show car produced 493 hp (500PS) from a combination of the hottest version of the firm’s 1.6-liter turbo, dialed all the way up to 266 hp, and two 114 hp electric motors (one on each axle).

The front track is reportedly some 80 mm wider – that seems to be true as the wheels really stick out in one of the two photos of Picat.

Perhaps Peugeot really does want to be taken seriously as a performance brand, and we’ve been hearing about Peugeot Sport more and more often these days, so maybe they can do something to turn the brand’s image around.

If this is true, then the car could be on sale in two years’ time.
