This 9 second video will blow you away.
The days of dangerous, entertaining rally racing didn’t die along with the ban of Group B automobiles. In fact, modern rally cars are just as fast (if not faster) and the spectators are just as mad. Getting close to rally cars seems to be the next big thing in extreme sports.
It’s always cool to see a close pass, but people seem to forget that racing-cars are just a pile of ballistic metal. Sure, some of them are controlled by the most talented and skillful drivers, but there’s always a chance that something might go wrong and then everybody (and everything) will be at the mercy of these beasts.
Rally is a very unpredictable motorsport discipline and it gets even worse if bystanders are just asking for trouble. Take for instance these guys trying to film a passing Volkswagen Polo.
The car was going so fast, the bloke in the foreground didn’t even had any time to react to the sheer speed it carried through the bend. So, is it worth endangering your life for a breathtaking video captured with your phone? In fact, a close analysis of the footage shows the driver steering away from the spectators, right before landing. Thank God it’s AWD.
Granted, the footage captured is incredible; unbelievable, even. A WRC car romping and pounding on the gravel, being chased by a helicopter is pure motorsport-porn. But, from the driver’s perspective, I don’t think seeing a guy nearly in the middle of the road, while you’re jumping over blind crests at full throttle is as awesome as some might think.
