Is the new Alfa Romeo Giulia QV that stupendously fast?
New reports indicate that the Italian super saloon lapped the Green Hell in 7:43 minutes. To be honest, everybody expected the car to be quick around the track, but that’s just on a whole different level – at least according to the the Alfa Project 952 Facebook page, which posted a screenshot of the lap-time registered on Fastestlaps.
7:43 is the same as a 2003 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It’s cool to think a modern-day four-door saloon is just as fast as a track-oriented performance automobile was 12 year ago, but between the 7:52 lap time set by the M4 and the alleged 7:43 set by the Giulia, these cars are present:
Pagani Zonda C12 S, Audi R8 V10, Mercedes CLK 63 Black Series, Gardner Douglas GD T70 Spyder, Mercedes C63 Coupe Black Series, 2000 Porsche 911 GT2, Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, Jaguar XJ220, Lamborghini Murcielago LP-640 E-Gear, Ferrari 599 GTB, Wiesmann GT MF5, 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo, BMW M3 GTS, Alpina B3 GT3, RUF CTR2, “normal” Lamborghini Murcielago, BMW M3 CSL, 2008 911 Carrera S, Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series, Jaguar XKR-S, Ford GT, Panamera Turbo S, Gallardo LP560-4 (for some reason), BMW M5 and Aston Martin V12 Vantage S.
Moreover, a 9 second deficit in favor of the Alfa over the BMW M4 is a mind-boggling achievement, especially for a car that was developed in only 2.5 years – without a lot of prior expertise of RWD vehicles in the past 20 years to rely on. Well, I’m not saying a Cupra 280 can keep up with it, as we saw in a recent video, but a 7:43 lap time is a little too… optimistic, even for pre-production testing sedan which, according to Blog di Motori, was allegedly enhanced to 532 horses, with a power to weigh ratio “remarkably lower than 3 Kg per Hp. Sure, I’m rooting for the underdog too, but let’s be realistic for a chance.
That and the fact everybody can edit the list on Fastestlaps and add a new lap-time makes the rumor even more dubious. In fact, as of now, the lap time has been taken down, although there’s an Abarth 500 EsseEsse that went around the ‘Ring in 6:20 minutes. Granted, it was driven by Jesus Christ, but c’mon.
That said, the 7:43 lap time remains only a rumor and we’ll have to see it too believe it first. At least from an official source. In the meantime, what do you guys think? Can the Giulia QV pull such a stunt?
