Aston Martin, while not a large manufacturer, is an established name whose feathers have been ruffled by the brutal power and overall usability and attractiveness of the Tesla Model S.
It is after all a car that some may consider over its own Rapide S (pictured), a very pretty but less practical and overall more conventional car.
Automotive News is now reporting Aston is going to have its very own EV sedan within the next two years. The source report suggests Aston’s answer would be an 800 hp all-electric Rapide, but it would end up costing nearly twice as much as the Model S…
Apparently, Aston would like to position the electric Rapide as a step up from the Model S, hence the expected $250,000 price tag.
Andy Palmer, brand CEO, criticized Tesla and its new Ludicrous mode, commenting that he’d much rather do a few clean laps of the ‘Ring than 500 meters in said mode in the Model S. That means even if Aston decides to make an EV, it won’t be as brutal as the Tesla.
Currently, the Rapide S is priced over $200,000 in the US, so a (necessary, regulation-appeasing) EV variant costing only $50,000 doesn’t seem that bad a deal. Most likely it will beat the Tesla in terms of exterior and interior design, but for everything else we’ll have to wait, see and carefully compare.
Make no mistake, while this may sound like speculative ramblings, Aston really seems to be interested in this project – they have not shied away from unusual versions of the Rapide in the past… We’ll keep an eye on this.
