While we might not always see eye to eye with those in charge of improving our Formula 1 viewing experience, this time Bernie Ecclestone really hits the nail on the head.

The F1 boss recently described Mercedes’ dominance of the sport as being “wrong” and thinks that we should have more competition at the very top of the standings.

In an interview with Dutch TV rights holder Sport 1, Ecclestone said: “What we really need is more competition. What I don’t want to happen is what’s happened [last weekend] – before that race, you could guarantee that the Mercedes cars were going to be first and second if they finished – we’re talking about qualifying, and the race as well.”

While I can totally understand his point, to be fair, we didn’t know for a fact that we were going to see a Mercedes 1-2 at Spa, especially after Rosberg got off to a poor start and Hamilton had to fight off Sergio Perez on the first lap.

When asked about Mercedes’ dominance, Ecclestone said that “What we’ve got at the moment, which is wrong, is one very, very, very dominant team – with a particularly dominant engine,” before bringing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel into the discussion and adding that “It’s not nice to see somebody like Vettel two seconds off the pace, because he is not two seconds off the pace.”

What’s ironic is that those very same fans that were tired of seeing Vettel win four titles in a row, are the same fans that cheered for him as he upset Mercedes in Malaysia and Hungary.

What that says is that what we really want is a balanced grid with several drivers that could win a Grand Prix on any given Sunday.
