A lot of a racing car’s appeal stems from the noise it makes, as you get to hear that more than you see the car whiz past. Ford’s GT LM racer was recently spotted around the Sebring track, testing, and judging by this video it doesn’t sound all that nice.
I don’t even think it sounds as good as the Riley-Ford DP racer, a car which should have a very similar engine setup – it might just be the video though, as they could sound identical. Either way, older racers were in a different league in this regard.
The diesel-powered Audi Le Mans racer is a more spectacular machine, even if it is quieter overall. This Ford racer just sounds flat and non-metallic – it almost sounds like the entire thing is computer generated and played back through some hidden speakers.
They (companies developing racing engines) really need to find a way to bring nice sounding engines into motorsport, because with the advent of Formula E and increasing use of turbochargers, we are definitely going in the opposite direction.
