We scoop the first shots of the second-generation Opel and Vauxhall Insignia, and if the rumors are true, the next Buick Regal as well.
We’ll remind you that the Buick Regal sold in North America is a re-badged version of the current, first-gen Insignia with a waterfall-style grille and market-specific trims.
The model spied here is a sleek five-door liftback version of the next Insignia that will be joined by an estate body style, which GM is said to be considering for the States.
Some reports claim that Opel and Vauxhall will not offer the Insignia as a regular four-door sedan, but at this point, we don’t know if the same will apply to the Regal or if GM will create its own variant specifically for Buick.
There’s plenty of cladding on this prototype, including non-production parts for both the front and rear ends, but it should look sharper than the current car with styling influences from the 2013 Opel Monza Concept.
The new Insignia will grow slightly in length sporting a stretched wheelbase said to be up to 100mm longer, according to some sources, to improve rear passenger legroom. Like the new Astra that dropped up to 200kg (440 lbs) over its predecessor, the bigger Insignia will also benefit from a similar weight reduction.
While our spies managed to take a quick peek inside, sadly, the dashboard was covered up. We have heard, though, that Opel is looking to offer a customizable digital dashboard on the next Insignia that should land in European dealerships and in the US as the 2018 Buick Regal, in 2017.
