There’s been lots of talk about the updated 911, code-named 991/2 rumored to launch in Frankfurt, yet somehow, the current Turbo is being sidelined.
One can argue that, a) the adoption of forced induction by the plain-vanilla 911 is much more important, b) everyone is still busy raving about the GT3 and GT3 RS (and rightly so), and, c) the Turbo is, well, not that much of a headline-grabber anymore.
Maybe everyone’s got used to think of the 911 Turbo as the Swiss Army knife of the range. The one that, thanks to its four-wheel drive and lots of oomph can outrun almost everything and still remain a car you can drive every day. A Swiss Army knife is much more useful than a katana, but if you want to impress your friends you’ll showcase the latter, right?
Apparently everyone seems to forget that, with 513HP, the Turbo is the fastest of the lot. Apart, that is, from the 552HP Turbo S version that does the 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 2.6 seconds flat and the 0-100 mph (0-160 km/h) in just 6.2 seconds. Enough said…
The facelifted 911 Turbo S was spotted at the Nürburgring without any camouflage at all for the first time ever, so we can see it in all its glory before Porsche goes ahead with the official launch.
Like the lesser 911s, the Turbo S will get new front and rear lights and an engine cover with vertical, instead of horizontal, slats. The revised Turbo S also sports enlarged air intakes in the front bumper but, other than that, there’s not much to distinguish it from its predecessor.
The cabin will be subtly restyled, with a 918 Spyder-look steering wheel and a bigger screen for the infotainment system but, for the time being, there have been no leaks whatsoever about any changes under the skin.
Could it be that Porsche believes it doesn’t need any more power, for example? That could be the case, as it is already a formidable weapon, though this seems unlikely given that the competition has grown stronger.
