A day after unveiling the facelifted Land Cruiser 200 in Japan, Toyota gives us the lowdown on the US-spec 2016 Land Cruiser as well.

The US will get the same updates as the rest of the world, minus the engines. While in other markets the facelifted Land Cruiser will be offered with a 4.6-liter V8 gasoline unit and a 4.5-liter twin-turbo diesel V8, in the US the SUV carries on with the 5.7-liter V8 that also equips the 2016 Lexus LX 570.

Styling-wise, the US-spec 2016 Toyota Land Cruiser gets the same updates as in the rest of the world, including new front bumper, grille, projector-beam LED headlights, headlight cleaners and integrated Land Cruiser logo. At the rear, the Land Cruiser gets new taillights with light-tube design and LED brake lights, a new full-width chrome molding and a new bumper. The profile is dominated by new 18-inch alloy wheels and a chrome body side molding embossed with the Land Cruiser logo.

The big SUV will be offered with a fully equipped version in the US with seating for eight. No optional extras are offered because Toyota says none are needed. For the interior, customers can choose between two hues of semi-aniline perforated leather – black or Terra (brown), both with Deep Wood trim accents. Other changes inside include the redesigned center console with more intuitive controls, as well as the upgraded Entune head unit, which adds Siri Eyes Free mode and other performance enhancements for 2016.

The steering wheel now integrates switches for the multi-information display, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and new Toyota Safety Sense-P package, and a new Qi wireless phone charging (for compatible devices) is also offered. Speaking of the Toyota Safety Sense-P package, it includes Frontal Collision Avoidance at speeds below 24 mph (including pedestrian protection), Frontal Collision Mitigation (also for speeds below 24 mph), Lane Departure Alert, Auto High Beams and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

The 5.7-liter V8 engine produces 381hp and 401lb-ft (543Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm – 90-percent of peak torque is produced at just 2,200 rpm. A new 8-speed automatic transmission replaces the 6-speed unit, allegedly enhancing fuel efficiency. The 2016 Land Cruiser is EPA-rated at 13 mpg in the city, 18 mpg on the highway and 15 mpg combined.

The full-time 4WD system uses a Torsen limited-slip locking center differential to distribute torque 40:60 front-to-rear. In case of wheel slippage, the differential can direct more torque to the wheels with the best grip. Combine this with a 2-speed transfer case with low-range and the Multi-terrain Select system and chances are the Land Cruiser can tackle any kind of terrain.
