Mercedes-Benz has officially lifted the veils off the sixth variant of the current S-Class family, the new S-Class Cabriolet.
Debuting at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971 is tipped as the “world’s most comfortable convertible.” It can be fitted with an enhanced automatic wind protection system called Aircap, the Airscarf neck-level heating system, heated armrests, heated seats and the Thermotronic intelligent climate control system.
The latter is controlled fully automatically, which means that the driver does not need to select a mode for closed or open top, nor does he need save a temperature setting for these driving conditions.
Mercedes-Benz also says the S-Class Cabriolet is “exceptionally rigid.” Furthermore, the luggage compartment bulkhead made of aluminum and magnesium as well as the aluminum rear floor lower the body shell weight to the level of the S-Class Coupé.
Mercedes-Benz designers have paid attention to the luggage compartment concept as well: when the soft top is opened, it folds away into a part of the boot. This means that the driver no longer needs to stop in order to operate the luggage compartment cover manually. In addition, when the soft top is closed, the luggage compartment partition can be retracted to increase the available luggage space.
The three-layer acoustic soft top, available in black, dark blue, beige and dark red, can be opened or closed while on the move up to a speed of 60 km/h (37 mph). Opening and closing take around 20 seconds.
The S-Class Cabriolet will go on sale in December and will arrive in dealerships in spring 2016 with two powertrains: the 455PS 4.7-liter V8 in the S 500 Cabriolet and the 585PS 5.5-liter biturbo V8 in the S 63 4Matic Cabriolet. The latter is capable of covering the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 3.9 seconds.
