The average European car buyer is being strongly enticed by pretty much every manufacturer to buy something slightly higher off the ground. Ford only had the Kuga on offer to cater for that, then it added the failed EcoSport (which it has since reportedly improved on) and now, more importantly, it’s brought the Edge over the Pond.
Previously a US-only model, this second-gen Edge has been designed as global vehicle. Ford really needed such a vehicle in Europe, where if you wanted anything with some off-road capability that was bigger than the Kuga, all you really had to go for was the Ranger.
Now that has been improved and refined too, but it’s the Edge that has the highest chance to shine, especially since it looks like more of an SUV than the Kuga, yet still has frugal 2.0-liter diesel engines to keep things sensible.
In fact, that’s all it’s offered with, but in top spec trim it does have 210 PS / 450 Nm which we’ve seen in the Mondeo – that should be more than enough performance for it according to European tastes.
As a reminder, it’s not the first time it was shown in Europe, as it actually debuted at the Paris motor show 2014, but it was now in Frankfurt that it was finally detailed and presented in full.
