Our spies spotted this camouflaged version of Ford’s Fusion, otherwise known as Mondeo in Europe and elsewhere, and we think it’s the performance ST model.
How else can you can explain those quad-pipe tips sticking out from the back and the very Focus ST-like brake calipers inside the 19-inch wheels on the prototype we nabbed here in the USA?
Another telltale sign we noticed in these pictures was the intercooler peeking from behind the lower grille opening.
The car isn’t production ready yet, so we could see additional modifications to the Fusion’s design up front and at the back, such as spoilers and a diffuser.
The million-dollar question, of course, is what’s lurking under the hood. Some sources think that Ford may use their new 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged V6 EcoBoost found in the 2015 F-150 producing upwards of 300-horses in this application, paired to all-wheel drive and very likely, a six-speed automatic.
However, another option, which sounds more appropriate for the European-specification model known under the Mondeo ST nameplate, would be a version of their new 2.3-liter turbo four EcoBoost that develops 345hp (350PS) in the hot hatch and 310hp in the Mustang. Perhaps Ford may end up using different powertrains for each side of the Atlantic.
Both the Fusion and later, the Mondeo, are scheduled for a facelift, with the North American model having already been spied undergoing tests.
