Motor racing is known to bite hard, but this time it made a scene with seventeen-year old Pedro Piquet.
If the name Piquet may seem too familiar, then you’re probably thinking about the former Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet. Pedro is Nelson’s son, and although he’s only 17-years of age, he competes in various motorsport disciplines. It seems that speed runs through the family.
Unfortunately, so do accidents – as Nelson Piquet himself suffered some major bruises in his prime. But that’s just how motorsport is, it can happen to anybody, and Pedro seems to learn the “ways of the force” the hard way and from an early age.
While racing in the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge in Brazil, the young racing driver suffered a very extreme crash on the opening lap when fellow racing driver Ricardo Baptista locked the wheels under braking and careered into Piquet, sending him on the grass.
Mind you, the violent aftermath is a reminder of the dangers in motorsport. Thankfully the pilot escaped unharmed, with only minor bruises thanks to the Porsche’s 991 racecar safety features. In fact, Piquet posted a photo of himself from the hospital after the crash, thanking his friends and fans for the support. Having only helmet injuries, it kind of gives you an idea how brutal motorsport is and what forces are involved during a crash.
