The impressive Bloodhound SSC land speed record car is almost done and it’s set to start testing next year. It was unveiled to the public today during a special ceremony held in London.
It’s been eight years in the making and now the project, which is aimed primarily at inspiring young minds, is in its final stretch. The vehicle being shown in London is the ‘record attempt configuration,’ with the 2m high tail fin in place. We assume that for the first trial runs it will not be attached.
Power comes from one Rolls-Royce EJ200 jet engine combined with one Nammo rocket which needs so much fuel it has a supercharged Jaguar V8 doing the pumping. With a combined thrust equivalent to 135,000 hp, the Bloodhound is the most powerful land vehicle in the world.
Other geeky facts about it include fact that the seven embedded fire extinguishers and three separate braking systems (one we presume is the parachute) and if the mechanical brakes are deployed at speeds above 250 mph / 402 km/h, they will catch fire.
Oh, and the dashboard is packing custom Rolex analog gauges in case the digital readouts fail.
