The last time we saw a BMW 8-Series rendering, it was nothing but a re-worked 7-Series with a modified C-Pillar, missing its rear doors. However this iteration is a little bit more creative.
The reason why this 8-Series still looks familiar is because the designer based it on the Gran Lusso concept from 2013 – originally created with the help of Pininfarina. The concept if you recall, had this long light strip at the back instead of a good old fashioned taillight design like we see in this rendering.
If BMW plans to keep using even numbers for their Coupe range models, then if/when “this car” gets made, it should definitely be called the 8-Series. If they’re going to add a ‘Coupe’ at the end of that, remains to be seen.
As for rivaling the Mercedes S-Class Coupe, well, that would be this car’s main purpose in life, though BMW would probably need to do a better job at design-wise than with the Gran Lusso, considering how elegant the S Coupe is.
Audi should have their say in this segment as well with a Prologue Concept-based production spec Coupe positioned above or on the same level as the A8 flagship.
Once this luxury coupe segment expands, things are going to get really interesting both design-wise as well as regarding all the tech these types of models will be introducing.
