The Datsun brand has unveiled its second concept car in just 17 months, the GO-cross study.

Displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Datsun GO-cross Concept showcases the brand’s vision for a possible expansion of the Datsun GO/GO+ family in high growth markets such as Africa, Middle East, South East Asia and beyond.

Datsun says the concept “investigates the market potential of a cross-over with spirit and a sense of adventure.” Although the GO-cross Concept is just a design study for now, it shares the same platform as the Datsun GO+ and borrows design cues from that vehicle.

You’ll have to agree that it looks much better though, with proportions that are pleasant to the eye and neat-looking details. No information was offered about the powertrain, but we can speculate it’s powered by the same 1.2-liter petrol engine linked to a 5-speed manual transmission from the GO+.

“This is a significant day for Datsun. We have successfully completed the first phase of our return, and feel proud that through our vehicles more than 100,000 customers have been able to make their dream of personal mobility a reality,” said Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun.

The executive added that Datsun’s expansion plans include the growth of sales and service networks in the four existing markets, while expanding the offering to three models in India.

“We will launch a totally new model at the beginning of 2016, which will be the first Nissan Motor model based on the new Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-A architecture,” Cobee said about Datsun’s plans in Russia.

Datsun also considers expanding to other high-growth markets around the world, including Africa.
