This is how Mercedes-AMG tested the brand’s all-new four-liter twin-turbo M178 V8 to replace the older 6.2-liter unit.

Just like the old one, it will be used in a variety of AMGs, from the GT to the C63, and we know it’s been suggested it can be made even more powerful in its current configuration.

It is, basically, just two A45 2.0-liter units bolted together in a V configuration, using the same crank case. Compactness was definitely a high priority during development and this is one of its strong suits; even the placement of the turbos (in-between the cylinder banks) helps keep it compact, as well as reduce lag at the same time.

The M178 got special attention from the engineers all throughout its development and the highlights of that process were documented and added to the official video posted below.
