As two of the hottest and most desirable SUVs on the market go head to head in all categories, seeing which is fastest in a straight line drag race never gets old.

Good things will happen when you put two nearly identical SUVs on a drag racing collision course. The BMW X6 M and the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S Coupe are perhaps more alike than each of their manufacturers would care to admit, but the numbers rarely lie.

What we have here is damn near identical performance figures for both cars, and a literally identical 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time, which means that once the ball gets rolling, the only difference between them (if any) might be their transmissions.

By revisiting the numbers, we can see that the more established X6 M packs 575 PS and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque, while weighing in at approximately 2,340 kg (5,158 lbs). Not exactly a featherweight but it will pack a serious punch, regardless of where you are in the rev range.

The GLE 63 S Coupe keeps things interesting at 585 PS and 760 Nm (560 lb-ft), tipping the scales at 2,350 kg (5,180 lbs). Basically, it’s 10 kg (22 lbs) heavier, but has 10 extra PS & Nm of torque. Sounds like a surprisingly fair fight, doesn’t it?

Both cars will hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.2 seconds off the line, which means that we can start looking at their automatic transmissions for answers once they start shifting gears.

In fact, you’ll see that both got a nearly identical start, though one of them started to gain a very minor advantage shortly after. Of course, we’re not going to say which one, so feel free to guess and then check out the video for confirmation.
