The new turbocharged Porsche 911 Carrera S gets its video review debut, delivering some crucial answers.

The updated version of the Porsche 991 represents one of the most significant changes in the model’s long history, very similar to the switch from air-cooling to water-cooling. The mid-life facelift of the 991 range brought a pair of new, turbocharged engines for the Carrera and Carrera S models, signifying the death of the naturally aspirated flat-six of the core 911 models.

The old engines were replaced by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre flat six which makes 365hp and 450Nm (332lb ft) of torque in the base Carrera model. The same engine makes 414hp and 500Nm (369lb ft) in the Carrera S. This means that the new models have gained 20hp and 60Nm (44lb ft) of torque over their predecessors, which is always good news.

The new flat six can rev up to 7,500rpm, which is more than you would normally expect from a twin-turbo engine but the main questions remain, like what’s the soundtrack like and if the new engine has dulled or not the class-leading driving character of Porsche’s iconic model.
