The clash of the titans continues, as the P1, 918 and LaFerrari meet again in a trial by drag race.
After only a few tenths of a second separated the Porsche and the Ferrari from the crowned McLaren on Silverstone in the last test – which you can watch below, by the way – the cars were pitted against each other on the drag strip.
The car collection, aslo known as “the holy trinity”, was initially offered by Paul Bailey – a British businessman – who reckoned it would be a good idea to stage a shootout between the three cars before Clarkson and Co, (and even Chris Harris) get their hands on all of them.
So, what have we learned? Well, let’s just say that October isn’t the best month to go drag racing in the UK. Not even on a professional racing strip like Santa Pod. Even though the track was heated up, the cars registered slow times in comparison with… everything, actually.
The final (or best) time achieved by the Ferrari – 11.21 – is similar to the one registered by the Challenger SRT Hellcat, the 2007 599 GTB Fiorano and the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4. As a matter of fact, it’s slower than the Enzo’s, 458 Italia’s and, worst of all, Tesla’s Model S P90D…model.
The Porsche’s time is similar to the one achieved by Car And Driver with a McLaren MP4-12C, which proves that the test is kind of inconclusive. But that’s to be expected in a situation where the cars struggle to find traction, making the wheels squeal while skidding three thirds of the track’s distance.
Under normal conditions, the LaFerrari, 918 and P1 would each apparently register 9.7, 9.8 and 9.8 seconds on the quarter mile, as tested by Road and Track, Motor Trend and Car and Driver.
