News broke that Subaru filed a patent in Japan for an aggressive-looking BRZ that looks exactly like the BRZ STI Performance concept we saw in the New York Auto Show this year.
The report originally came from Autoguide saying that the patent filings give credit to Fuji Heavy Industries, parent company of Subaru. As much as we’d wish for this to mean that Subaru –and Toyota– are indeed working on a hotter variant of the compact RWD coupe, our money goes to the much safer option of Subaru just wanting to trademark their concept, a very common practice of the industry.
This is backed up by the fact that the patent drawings show a car exactly the same with the BRZ STI Concept, from the huge rear wing to the STI alloy wheels and from the crazy aero agenda to the smaller door mirrors. When concepts are indeed heading to production, car makers replace or modify bits like these in order to comply with safety and other regulations around the globe.
We would love for Toyota and Subaru to finally develop a proper hardcore variant of the Toyobaru twins but given the nature of this patent drawing, we wouldn’t -and as much it pains us to admit this- hold our breaths for this.
