Opel has big plans for the next generation of its mid-size saloon, as a new generation is said to be just around the corner.
Germany’s AutoBild reports that the Insignia replacement will grow in length by up to 15cm (6in) and its wheelbase should be 9cm (3.5in) longer, resulting in a more spacious interior.
The model is believed to be based on a new global platform made by Opel’s parent company, General Motors, which is rumored to be called the E2xx. Thanks to its new underpinnings, weight will reportednly be reduced by up to 100kg (220lbs) despite the car’s bigger size.
A variety of new three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel burners, including a fresh bi-turbo diesel rated at approximately 160PS (158hp), is believed to be powering the all-new Insignia.
An 8-speed single-clutch transmission is also mentioned, along with an all-wheel drive system and an adaptive suspension. The same report indicates that there will also be OPC version, which is expected to pack a six-cylinder turbocharged unit with an output of around 400PS (394hp).
In terms of design, the future Opel Insignia will adopt some styling cues from the new Astra K as well as the Monza Concept. Moreover, the sloping roofline that’s visible in the scoop images might tempt Opel to market it as a four-door coupe, which apparently sounds more trendy than a “sedan”. This bodystyle will be joined by the Sports Tourer, i.e. estate, version later on.
