An extremely rare 1977 BMW M1 E26 popped up for sale.

Yes, with a total production run of only 453 units between 1978 and 1981, it’s rare enough as it is. The impressive M1 E26 was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and it has a 3,453cc engine with 277PS (273hp), which are sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox.

This particular car, though, is even more special.

That’s because, believe it or not, this is chassis number 001 – the first prototype out of seven that were built. Moreover, it has just 1,000 miles (1,600 km) showing on its odometer!

BMW‘s first example of its exotic is found in Bad Aibling, Germany. It needs a complete restoration for its engine, transmission and suspension, as it has stayed in a dry barn for the last 30 years.

The exclusive Bimmer is in a timed auction, until Sunday, December 27, on eBay, and at the time of writing 65 bids were placed, which raised the price to $50,100. The buyer is responsible for picking up the vehicle or for shipping.
