Launched to much fanfare just a couple of months ago after well over a year of spy shots and spy videos, the BMW M2 has all the ingredients to become hugely popular as it’s much closer to the concept of the first M3 than its current namesake.
While BMW hasn’t disclosed whether production of the M2 will be restricted to maintain its exclusivity, new reports at BMW Blog claim that the M2 could actually enjoy a five-year production run right through to 2020. If those claims are true, then there’s a very good chance that in the coming five years, we’ll see a selection of different M2 variations. Most importantly, it opens up the possibility of a track-focused M2 GTS being launched.
If an M2 GTS were ever launched, BMW would have to be careful about where to position it in its range. As it stands, the existing M2 is only about 60 hp shy on the entry-level M4, so any possible M2 GTS would likely sit around the 400 hp mark, as to not outperform the standard M4. With a stripped-out interior and downforce-generating aerodynamic components however, an M2 GTS could still prove faster than a typical M4 around a racetrack.
Production of the M2 is currently being handled by the company’s Leipzig plant, which also manufactures the standard 2-Series Coupe and Convertible models as well as the 2-Series Active Tourer, 1-Series, i3 and i8.
