Honda S2000 Successor Could Take Aim At Mazda MX-5

It’s no secret that Honda is hard at work developing a successor to the S2000. While reports have hinted at a selection of possible routes the Japanese company could take with the car, the latest word from Autocar is that it will be targeted against the Mazda MX-5 and Fiat 124 Spider.

It is suggested that the second-generation Honda S2000 with remain similar to the original car in that it will have rear-wheel drive, and a front-mounted engine positioned behind the front axle, effectively making it front-mid engined.

Compared to the Mazda MX-5, the future S2000 is expected to offer more performance. As such, it should easily outperform its two main rivals. While it isn’t confirmed just what will power the new S2000, it is claimed that it could utilise Honda’s upcoming 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder delivering around 180 hp.

For S2000 enthusiasts looking for even more power, a hardcore Type R version could be offered with the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four as the 2016 Civic Type R albeit detuned from the hatchback’s impressive 306 hp. Beyond the more potent engine, an S2000 Type R could receive a limited-slip differential at the rear, six-speed manual transmission and more track-oriented suspension and braking systems to rival a potential Abarth-tuned 124 Spider derivative.

If all goes as planned, the next S2000 will be available in the United States, though, there’s a possibility it could be badged as an Acura.
