In September, Bentley made history the world with the unveiling of the Bentayga, its first-ever crossover in history. Pinned as the world’s most expensive and luxurious SUV, it became the fastest SUV on the planeth, beating the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.
If Lamborghini has its way however, the Bentayga won’t hold that accolade for long. The Italian company is currently in the midst of developing its long-awaited Urus SUV.
Despite being revealed as a concept three and a half years ago, the car was only recently confirmed for production and will utilize a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8.
Although there is no word about its output, chief executive Stephan Winkelmann says it’ll be enough to make the Urus the world’s fastest SUV.
“Our car will be the first time Lamborghini has a turbocharged engine, a V8 and it will be the fastest SUV for sure. That has been a key objective. In terms of top speed, in terms of acceleration, in terms of everything . It has to be, it’s a Lamborghini”, Winkelmann told Car and Driver.
He also gave the clearest hint so far that the Urus is likely to be offered as a plug-in hybrid as well.
“We are looking into the opportunity of making the Urus the first Lamborghini ever to have [the option of] a second engine. it’s a big challenge to cover the life cycle of any car with one engine; with the Urus one of the obvious scenarios is hybridization.”
