Even though the Roomster was in an advanced stage of development, the VW-owned company decided to can it in order to concentrate its resources on other projects.

A few days after a report stated that Skoda plans to axe its compact multi-purpose-vehicle the Czech car manufacturer came clean and confirmed the rumor.

In an interview with Autovisie, a Skoda spokesperson said that the brand wants to strengthen its model range in the SUV segment by focusing on the development of compact and affordable SUVS, instead of MPVs. Nothing surprising here, especially as Skoda expressed its “appetite” for a comprehensive line-up of crossovers/SUVs for quite some time now.

Not only that, but the Roomster’s cancellation may have been an aftermath of Volkswagen’s budget cuts in the wake of the “Dieselgate” scandal, with the German multinational company previously announcing cutbacks and postpones for products that aren’t absolutely necessary.

Unlike the previous generation which was based on the Fabia model and the Volkswagen Polo, its replacement was supposed to utilize the underpinning of the Caddy and a much more conventional design.
