Volvo’s XC90, S80, S60, V60 and XC60 models have all been awarded a 2016 Top Safety+ Award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the most among any premium/luxury manufacturers.
Every single Volvo model tested by the IIHS in 2015 has received the Top Safety Pick+ Award, which is the highest possible rating a car can get in the United States. This honor also caps the end of a very successful year for Volvo as US sales went up by 18%.
Of course, credited for this surge in sales have been the all-new XC90 and the XC60 which has seen a 31% increase in sales compared to the previous year.
President & CEO of Volvo Cars North America, Lex Kerssemakers said that “Volvo continues its strong tradition of safety. It is a tradition that is core to how we do things and our vision for the future. Our vision is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020. Our recognition as the luxury automaker with the most IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus awards is another milestone in the journey toward that vision.”
While the 2020 thing has been overly emphasized by the Swedish car manufacturer these past couple of months, the fact that Volvo keeps scoring points when it matters does tend to set our minds at ease as far as trusting them to come through with their vision – which so far has led to a new and very efficient engine strategy as well as world-leading advancements in autonomous and semi-autonomous driving, as well as top safety benchmarks.
With the 2017 S90 already in the spotlight as their new luxury mid-size sedan, we’ll find out even more about Volvo’s future in January at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show. The S90 itself will be available at US retailers this summer.
