Confirmation has come that Rolls-Royce has started testing its brand new aluminium space-frame architecture, set to underpin all of its future models.
The development of such a platform was announced back in February 2015 and will arrive on the market from early 2018. At this stage, it hasn’t been revealed just what new model will be the first underpinned by the platform but it will either be the firm’s exceptionally-luxurious SUV, currently codenamed Project Cullinan, or the next-generation Phantom.
Currently, the British marque is testing the architecture on both engineering mules for the SUV and next-gen Phantom, at a range of locations around the world. Rolls-Royce says that testing is currently focused on ensuring the platform can provide the ride comfort the company is synonymous with while also being tough enough to survive the most extreme climatic conditions.
Chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Torsten Muller-Otvos says “Since 2003 and the commissioning of the new Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has reset the benchmark for luxury motoring. Now it is time to take the next step in the luxury journey. This is why I am announcing today that on-road testing of our all-new proprietary architecture is beginning. This new architecture of pure luxury represents considerable investment in the future of our great brand.”
