A new era of Porsche sports cars is here, following the roll-out of turbocharged engines for the 718 Boxster and 911.
In creating the new turbocharged flat-four and flat-six engines, Porsche focused extensively on the car’s exhaust notes, hoping to ensure they sound as good as their naturally-aspirated predecessors. Have they succeeded?
Well, one YouTuber has mashed together a number of clips of turbo’d and pre-turbo Boxster and 911 variants on the move to find out.
Starting with the Boxster, the new 2.5-liter turbo-four is certainly quieter than the all-motor 3.4-liter flat-six of the Boxster GTS, yet still sounds quite good. Importantly, the 718 Boxster has only been released in entry-level guises so when the next GTS arrives, one can be assured Porsche’s engineers will work their magic to try and make it sound as good as the previous gen-car.
As for the turbo’d 911 Carrera S, it has been compared to the naturally-aspirated Carrera GTS and like the 718 Boxster, sounds quite good for a turbocharged sports car but in reality, can’t rival its predecessor.
While the new models may not sound as good, the fact that they are more powerful and fuel efficient should be enough to sway any on-the-fence buyers.
