Starting in April, customers purchasing a brand new Skoda Octavia or Superb will be able to opt for the ‘Phonebox with wireless charging’ option, which as of right now stands as an upgrade over the current Phonebox feature.
The way Skoda’s wireless charging works is by using a planar array, communicating with your smartphone via near-field coupling and transmitting signals to the car’s antenna. This tech charges compatible devices inductively according to the Qi standard.
The current flows wirelessly from a coil in the bottom of the Phonebox to a receiver coil inside the phone – while data is also transferred between the transmitter and receiver to ensure optimum energy transfer.
The Phonebox is claimed to combine good voice quality and high connection security with convenient operation, according to the Czech manufacturer, while your mobile device remains fully operational during charging.
Currently, there are plenty of smartphones from manufacturers such as Samsung, Google, LG, Sony, Microsoft, Blackberry and Nokia that already feature Qi technology. However, iPhone users will need specially designed cases in order to charge their phones wirelessly.
