Part of the firm’s plans to expand its SUV range with an even more upmarket model, the BMW X7 will be reportedly offered in two variants, the already announced 7-seater and a 4-seater with a different look.

The latter was announced as a “niche vehicle” by BMW of North America’s CEO, Ludwig Willisch, in an interview with AutoNews, who said that it will account for approximately 1 percent of X7 sales and it will cost more than $100,000, but “it would not be in the $200,000-plus range“.

While no one outside the company knows how it will look like, sales boss Ian Robertson stated that it will be different to the X5 and won’t use the aluminum spaceframe construction of the upcoming Rolls-Royce SUV, expected in 2018.

The BMW chief declined to say whether the range-topping X7 will take aim at the Maybach variant of the Mercedes-Benz GLS, but it will represent a first step towards the addition of new models to BMW’s range, among which one that “is well under way, we will see it in the not too distant future. This is not something we dreamt up last week“, Robertson said, without mentioning the rumored 9-Series.

The X7 won’t be the only crossover to be added in the German manufacturer’s lineup, as an all-new compact will join the lineup soon. This is expected to hit the market next year, under the X2 moniker, essentially a coupe version of the X1 sitting below the X4 and X6.
