Instead of opting for a traditional retractable hard-top, Mazda decided to equip the Miata with a very cool (and complicated) targa top.
The new Mazda MX-5 RF (which translates into Retractable Fastback) is the closest thing we ever got to a Miata coupe and it looks the business.
Unlike the soft-top model, the new roof is electrically operated at the push of a button up to speeds of 10km/h (6.2mph). The new buttresses give the MX-5 a very welcoming targa look which helps in making the RF further distinguish itself from the regular model.
Although we still don’t know what the weight penalty might be for this beautiful roof, we don’t expect a big difference. Mazda only says that they’ve managed to offer the same boot capacity with the soft-top model and that future customers will be offered an optional six-speed automatic as an exclusive feature.
Check the video, provided by Auto Express, which demonstrates how the new roof works.
