Rumors about a possible mystical Dino have been in the motoring press for a year now, and although Sergio Marchionne kept ambiguous, at least he confirmed Ferrari’s new supercar is “on the drawing board”. Still, the Italian car maker might just cook something else.
According to Ferrari Far East Hub CEO, Dieter Knechtel, the company will definitely launch a fifth model, in the form of a second entry-level GT to complement the California T – or at least that’s what he said to The Motor Report during the Australian Grand Prix.
When asked if the California will remain the most affordable Ferrari available, Knechtel stated:
“I think so, currently that is our strategy (but) in the long term we will see what the company will do.”
Nothing out of the ordinary for a Ferrari official to “declare”, but the CEO went on saying that “there will also be another model after the California in the GT segment coming”.
Whether it’s the Dino or something else, it remains to be seen, but as with the California, the future model will undoubtedly act as a gateway for first-time Ferrari customers.
Nevertheless, judging by the spy pics we’ve seen of the car’s test mule, Ferrari’s new line-up addition will most likely sport a mid-engine format, although it will be built around a new modular architecture. Moreover, the powerplant rumored to be used under the “Dino’s” (or whatever it will be called) bonnet will be a twin-turbocharged V6 – considering Ferrari already developed one for Alfa Romeo.
“California T was definitely a success in our region (and) has helped in regions where we are reaching out for first-time buyers of Ferrari and people who haven’t thought about buying a Ferrari previously”, said Dieter Knechtel.
